Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales addressed an APAIC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) conference Sunday, March 4, 2018 announcing the news of moving their Embassy to Jerusalem two days after the U.S. plans to relocate their Embassy. “As a sovereign decision, we recognize Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel”, Morales said.
President Trump’s decision to relocate the U.S.Embassy ended seven decades of U.S. foreign policy resisting a recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. This decision has set a standard for other nations and Guatemala is the first country to follow.
In 1959 Guatemala was the first country to open an embassy in Jerusalem and in 1980 they relocated to Tel Aviv after the U.N. Security Council called on Guatemala and other countries to withdraw their Embassy. “It is important to be among the first, but it is more important to do what is right”, said Morales on Sunday.
